Aquatic Flora

The aquatic flora of the shallows includes species such as Shoreweed (Littorella uniflora), Water lobelia (Lobelia dortmanna), Quillwort (Isoetes lacustris) and Alternate Water-milfoil (Myriophyllum alterniflorum).  These rooted plant species are typically found in water depths of no greater than about 3.0m and form the base of the near-shore food chain, and provide habitat for numerous species of invertebrates, the total assemblage of which for Loch Morar includes 36 identified species/genera found in shallow and deep water habitats.

The low nutrient content of the loch’s waters results in low phytoplankton (planktonic plants) species diversity, but which includes Rhizosolenia longiseta, R. eriensis, Tabellaria flocculosa, Rhodomonas minuta, Gymnodinium helveticum, Staurastrum spp. Botryococcus braunii.
